change of cams...

As my friend Chip has left I am now stuck with my tiny camera to take photos, so I'm experimenting around what I can do with it. This picture is taken with my cam, it's not a great picture but i guess that's the best I can for the moment.

The object in the picture is not a rosary, but a necklace that looks like a rosary. When I first saw this type of necklaces in the windows of clothing shops I really disliked the idea of people wearing a religious item as a fashion object. Now my friend has one and since I know what it means for him to wear it I kind of start liking it. Of course not everybody wears it for the same reason, but oh well...This made me realize that for me the reason is more important than the action in itself. I wonder why that is...

Talking about something else... if you are interested in the conflict between Israel and Lebanon you might find it worth while to read this blog. It belongs to a Lebanese girl who is blogging from Beirut. Really nice and interesting postings...

to be honest, i've been waiting for this pic for quite sometime. nice composition. i cant agree more, with reasons come actions, but the most important thing is to reflect all the reasons so that it'll create meaningful actions. may peace prevail on earth. miss u guys! Fri 28-Jul-2006 12:17

As I'm leaving

As I'm leaving
A change comes on my eyes
These streets persuading me
With mumbled strange goodbyes

Through the water
Through the rain
To the soul of everything
Throw my heart out on the stones
And I'm almost gone

There's no meaning
In clothes and coffee cups
Cheap hotel furniture
Where silence never stops

Through the water
Through the rain
To the soul of everything
Throw my memories to the wind
And I'm almost gone

And now I'm dreaming
I'm staring at the walls
Cars are frozen now
In late night waterfalls

Love the song. Just to make it clear...it doesn't have anything to do with what i feel. I know there are people up there that would think it's about me and my recent experiences. i just felt that it fits the picture (or maybe it doesn't, dunno).

If you’re leaving, does that mane you’re coming to California? That’d be rad. Somehow I think it means Brussels, though. Oh well…

The picture itself looks more like “homecoming” to me (this could be my own frame of mind—I’m in my parents house right now), something about how the shoes are pointed towards the door. Though to go indoors, one must leave the outdoors, so who knows?

cathedral by night

This concludes the series of night pictures. The Cathedral in Linkoping is really a really nice and old building. And by night it is even prettier. Please also notice how much natural light it is for 2 a.m. That's the difficult thing in Sweden sometimes...it's never really dark at night.

To take the second picture we couldn't use the tripod because the building was too tall so my friend came with the idea to lie on the floor as to keep the camera from moving and then take the picture. Since we had two cameras I was taking pictures of the Cathedral and Chip was taking pictures of me. We're really dorky, I know!!! Anyways, I really like that picture so I thought about posting it.

scary night in the park...

Today's entry is also done in the park and has a funny story behind it. The building in the picture is located on top of a small hill that can only be reached by walking through the park which at that time was under dark. We were a bit scared at the beginning to go there but we managed.

When we got to the top it was a bit disappointing because the nice view of the city could not be seen because of the dark. So we decided to make photos of this building. It was such a peaceful place that I stopped being scared of being there, although until that moment I kept thinking about the two murders. I realized that I was just scaring myself for nothing and there was no one around that knew we were there. After some time there we went back down in the park. In one of the dark alleys I realized that the bike that was standing on the side of the road has been moved and my friend saw somebody in the dark watching us. I kept thinking how safe I felt when taking the pictures although we might not have been as safe since the man in the bush knew exactly where to find us. We got out of there veeeeeeery fast.

The second picture with the ghost-like figure in front of the door it is not photoshoped and is one of my favorites given the context. I just used a slow shutter speed which gave that effect.

This experience made me think that security is something we create for ourselves and like many other things in our life it is just in the eyes of the beholder. Each and everyone of us is creating his own reality, which can be a sad or a good thing at the same time.

Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world. Mon 24-Jul-2006 12:03

Night Pictures III

this picture is also taken in the park. What I like about this bridge is that it has something rustic about it. By day it just looks normal but at night when the lights are on the place just looks beautiful.

Night Pictures

Today I will start posting some of the night pictures I took a few weeks ago. They are my first night pictures. Before that evening I didn't even know you needed a tripod to take a night pic Most of them are done in a park in Linkoping. It was about 1 a.m when we arrived in the park, which is kind of a weird place to be by night. I was a bit scared about being there since I knew that two random murders took place in that park, but in the same time I really liked the experience.

This picture is done by the fountain, which is a really beautiful place by night. I hope you like it.

Stunning Night Shot .

Properly exposed...composition wise nice. Cool and I love those lightpole : Main subject that we noticed first was nicely placed ( The Rules of Third was well executed ).

Copyrights by Corbis Sygma

Today I'm taking another break from posting my own photos since I felt that I wanted to post what for me represents a very controversial photo. The picture was taken by Kevin Carter and it won him the Pulizer Prize in 1994. Probably most of you know the story but I will present it anyways for those who don't know. For saving up some time I took the text from wikipedia.

In March 1993 Kevin Carter made a trip to southern Sudan with intentions of documenting the local rebel movement. However, upon arriving and witnessing the horror of the famine, Carter began to take photographs of starving victims. The sound of soft, high-pitched whimpering near the village of Ayod attracted Carter to a young emaciated Sudanese toddler. The girl had stopped to rest while struggling to a feeding center, wherein a seemingly well-fed vulture had landed nearby. Carter snapped the haunting photograph and chased the vulture away. However, he also came under heavy criticism for just photographing — and not helping — the girl.
The photograph was sold to The New York Times where it appeared for the first time on March 26, 1993. Practically overnight hundreds of people contacted the newspaper to ask whether the child had survived, leading the newspaper to run a special editor's note saying the girl had enough strength to walk away from the vulture, but that her ultimate fate was unknown.
Carter later confided to friends that he wished he had intervened and helped the child. Journalists at the time were warned never to touch famine victims for fear of disease. After receiving his Pulitzer, Kevin Carter returned to Africa and committed suicide.

Besides the fact that the picture is one of the most shocking I have ever seen, it also raises some questions about the ethics of photography. Should Carter have helped the child in need or should he have just taken the picture and not interfere with nature's course? This is a question that is often encountered when talking about ethics of photography.
My opinion is that before being a photographer every person is a human being and as such it is our moral obligation to help. Searching for the subject I have found an article that goes into the direction of what I think so I present here the idea: "If you have placed yourself in the position where you can help, you are morally obligated to help". I know that there are many that believe otherwise so I just wanted to start a discussion about the subject since it's an interesting topic in photography.

Even more so, please take a minute to think about the situation in many African countries where many babies like this one die of hunger. I have asked myself many times if there is something I can do about it and the only conclusion I (helped by Chip ) could come up with is that of raising awareness about the situation.

FIrst, I never said don't do anything, I am just opposing the western attitud of saying " oh yes, we raised awareness, we are good people".

Second, concearning him not doing anything, acording to all your commentshe didsomething; he raised awareness. beside that, if you read the post it kind of explains why he didn'tdo anything.

hmmm..Palanlu...i think your opinion about the "western attitude" is really wrong. There are a lot of people in the West that would like to help and are trying to help. It's not like they're all just trying to feel good about themselves and that's it. There are a lot of people up there that honestly do care. It is just that the situation is very complicated in Africa and different solutions are tried out. As “boo”(silly nickname) said people that do care are trying to find out the way they can help with the situation. If you think that raising awareness is crap, then come up with a better solution…what are you doing about it?

About your second point, I don't know myself if Kevin Carter should have helped, but what I do know is that he was in a position where he could have done more than just raise awareness. He COULD have done more, I'm not saying that he SHOULD have done more. Apparently after the whole incident he thought he should have done more. I think it is a very difficult situation to assess since we don't have all the data about what happened.

Most famines are caused not by an overall lack of food, but by governments and civil wars that prevent the proper growing, delivery, marketing and distribution of food. When "Western attitudes" are inclined to help, often the help is diverted to warring troops and into the coffers of corrupt governments. Individuals can hardly enter a country, let alone bring enough aid to help.
By the time a body is starving such as shown here, what is Kevin Carter supposed to do, give away his sandwich?! There is no way that little girl could have digested anything Kevin Carter's body was able to handle.
The emotional burden Mister Carter was carrying must have been a terribly depressing fate. If not for this single foto, and a few others like it, however, the Western world would not have any idea what is happening across the ocean. I believe that the power of images to convey facts is underrated.

Until we meet again...

Today is a sad day for me...I had to say good bye to a good friend of mine. As in any exchange program people come and go, and with some you have a hard time letting go. This is how I feel now about my friend Chip going away. I have been in different places and made lot of friends but I think nowhere I found people that I would become so close to as here.

When I first arrived in Sweden I was in a hurry to leave and go on with my life, but plans have changed and I had to stay here longer. I don't regret a minute of the time spent here. We had great times and I've learnt a lot from our group of three friends. I think they are the nicest thing that happened to me in some time. I'm really blessed to have met them and hopefully we'll stay friends throughout the years. They've taught me a lot about life, happiness and myself. They were there through my bad times and I am sure that without them I would have had a much harder time. They were my strength when I didn't have any. Their constant care and love impressed me a lot and i can't thank them enough for everything they've done.

Six months and so many happy memories. Today Chip is leaving to pursue his dreams. I have no doubt that he will be a great researcher one day and later on a great husband and dad. He is the kindest person I've ever met and I hope he won't ever lose that. I've learnt a lot from him and I think we spent a lot of great moments together: going shopping at IKEA, bicycle rides, taking pictures at night in dangerous parks , picnics in cemetery, BBQs, jogging together, visiting different cities, sleeping in the parks in the sun, visiting the horses, hanging out in children's playgrounds and many more. They all bring back such happy memories.

Chip, you are the closest thing I've ever had to a brother and even if this is not a proper present, this entry is for you my friend. I'm going to miss you terribly.
Biggest hug you can imagine.

*listening to:DJ Sammy&Yanou "Heaven"

p.s. the pictures are not up for criticism. they just represent great memories.

My latest posting represents great memories too.
Funny thing is that I have a close friend I haven't seen in so long and I just realize I could never see him again coz I don't know how to say goodbye after that.

Double beauty

These are my two favorite horses. They are very loving and if you have an apple with you they're going to be even friendlier. The one on the left part of the screen is Ruby and the other one is Arrow. Ruby always wants to get all the attention and so he doesn't let Arrow get close to us very often. But usually Arrow tricks him that he is going to leave and then comes back to us on the other side. They're very cute!

I know that Ruby's picture has the same problem as the previous one: it is cut out, but sometimes it is very difficult to take his picture. I also believe that the lighting of the picture is not that great. The sun was shining right on his nose and that's why the area has more light.

Have a nice week-end everyone!

nice horses. wish u all the best in your future undertakings. stay cute. Sat 15-Jul-2006 18:53
