I thawgt I taw a pussytat!!!! I did!

the picture above was taken today...I thought it was rather funny and was hoping to bring a smile on your faces. We have two birds and we always put them next to the window because there is more light, so the cats in the area always come around hoping to catch the birds...this is one of those pictures
I'd like to mention that the birds are not scared of them so they're not stressed or anything. My little mouse on the other hand is terrified when he sees the cats so we never put him there. I guess he has stronger instincts...

I would not trust them cats specially when they can reach the bird's cage! Fri 8-Dec-2006 20:47

getting used to Korea

so I'm now trying to get used to the Korean landscape...it is so different from the European one so I need time to discover its beauty. Besides, I didn't have that much time these days to take my camera and go shooting.
Tonight i decided to do so but since it was raining and i wanted to protect my camera i didn't get to take too many pics. This is the best one from the lot taken tonight, although you can see that there were some drops of water on the lens....It is taken in the park close to where we live and since there are not so many places that inspire me at the moment i guess you'll see more of this park in my future pics

No matter what, it is great to be back and post pictures...

Back to photography in a rainy day! That's motivation... Thu 7-Dec-2006 21:16

my new baby!!!!

So i am now, since a few days back in Korea...and right after I came I received a lovely gift from my parents...a new camera....

It is my pleasure to introduce to you my new baby... a Cannon PowerShot S3 IS. So it would be fully presented i'll list all its extra components: a 0.75x Wide Angle Converter Lens as well as a 1.5x Teleconverter Lens. At the moment i only have a UV-1 Glass Filter but i intend to buy a 0.6 ND filter as well since i love day pictures made at a low shutter speed. So this is my new equipment which i'm really happy with. The picture above is one of the first ones and i blurred it in Photoshop since only the camera is important here, not the photographer...

Now that i've made the presentations I wanted to write about something different...if you love or are interested in art, you might like the following ppt file which presents the work of a modern sculptor. I fell in love with his art as it is very expressive and creative. I received the file by e-mail from a friend but i have uploaded it on yousendit.com so i can share it with you guys. You can find the file HERE (warning: the file has sound!!!). I hope you'll enjoy it as much as i did...

wooohooooo!!! irina and her new bf!

p/s: i couldnt see it on ur face, did u edit it?

like...BFFs! :)

So no one told you life was gonna be this way
(clap clap clap clap)
Your job's a joke, you're broke, your love life's D.O.A.
It's like you're always stuck in second gear
When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year
But
I'll be there for you (when the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you (like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you (because you're there for me too)

You're still in bed at ten, but work began at eight
You burned your breakfast, so far things are going great
Your mother warned you there'd be days like these
But she didn't tell you when the world has brought you down to your knees
That
I'll be there for you (when the rain starts to pour)
I'll be there for you (like I've been there before)
I'll be there for you (because you're there for me too)
------------------------

I'll miss you my friend...watching "Friends" without you won't be the same.....

i WILL allways be there for you, can't belive how empty it is here... Miss you allready, and i think i allways will til the day we meet again...
Love you my friend... And best of wishes to you on your new adventure...

Good Bye Lovely Sweden!

Rather emotional times... this entry might turn out rather dramatic but it is a tad emotional day for me...my last 24 hours in Sweden...when i started this blog and promised that i won't really talk about me and the focus will be my photography...BUT this entry is about me and my journey in Sweden....

It's been 10 beautiful months in Sweden and i consider myself really lucky to experience all this.... When I first arrived in Sweden I was eager to leave again and I wasn't looking to make new friends or to really make an experience out of my exchange program...but life had other plans for me so in the end i have spent 10 months in this beautiful country.

There are three things that cross my mind when thinking about my stay in Sweden.... First of all and most important, I have met some great people who I hope will stay my friends throughout the years. They mean the world to me and I will never forget the happy and not so happy moments spent together. I hope we'll share many more in the future. Secondly, I have learned a lot about myself and with my friends' help and support I have become (I think) a better and stronger person...And finally, I have learned more about Swedes and their culture. Lovely people and a beautiful country. Stockholm is definitely high on my list of favorite cities...

It is with sadness but also with excitement that I will leave Sweden tomorrow...

back to Linkoping

so I'm back in Sweden AND i have a few new pictures. Where should i start?....Copenhagen was great!! I had a lot of fun and loved the city...My friend was right that it is a great combination between Stockholm and London. I walked so much during those two days that my feet are still hurting even now. I'm glad i decided to go...

Even more so two of my dreams have came true in Copenhagen: I saw the Little Mermaid statue which I've been wanting to see since my mom was reading me Anderson's stories AND besides all the great art they have exposed in their museums I was surprised to find some of Rodin's sculptures (who is one of my favorite sculptor) AND I was able to see Rodin's "The Kiss", which is my favorite sculpture of his and i've been dying to see for years. It was the marble version of the sculpture and just to stand in front of it was an amazing feeling. What more could i have asked from Copenhagen?
One more interesting fact about it is that I was able to go to the World Press Photo 2006 exhibition which was more than great. I was so lucky to be there when they had this exposition going on and there were so many pictures that i just love. I searched about it online and if you're interested in seeing this year's photos you can click HERE.

One more interesting thing about Copenhagen and then i'll stop... I've also went(by accident) to a photo exposition about Peruvian life with a special focus on the indigenous community that lives on the island Taquile in the lake Titikaka. What was interesting about this exposition was that the pictures were taken by the Taquilenos themselves who live under the poverty line and have never really been exposed to digital photography. It was amazing what great photos they were able to take and how you could really see a learning curve in the process. There were also some specific techniques that they were always using which probably they discovered by themselves and liked. I was amazed how good photographers they were.

Since by now today's entry turned into a blog i'll also say a few words about the pictures i've posted. My friend Chip has come and visited for two days and he had his camera with him so i was able to take some picture. It was a very short visit but i was very happy to see him and spend some time with him. It's always great to see old friends. I took the pictures at the market place downtown since the light was just amazing. I can't wait to get my new camera and start shooting again.

miss u lots dear! Mon 20-Nov-2006 00:38

lazy lazy lazy...

ok so i've been really lazy these days and didn't post anything. The truth is that I also don't have that many pictures left. This is why I was so pleasantly surprised to see that the number of visits of my fp didn't go down during this time.

I've been enjoying a mini-holiday lately so there's not much going on around here. I've also decided to go on another holiday next week. Since I had such a nice time by myself in Brussels last week and since I don't know when I'll be in Scandinavia again, I've decided to go to Copenhagen for a few days. I'm really excited about going there alone and also about seeing the city. It's been a dream of mine since i was little to see the little mermaid statue. I will definitely take a disposable camera with me and shoot some pictures.

well until then I thought about posting this picture of a park here in Linkoping. I don't know why but whenever I see this place it kind of reminds me of the signs of the American diners.

In other order of ideas i was thinking these days about the different types of photography. I had a discussion with a friend of mine sometime ago and he seemed to think that pics should carry a message (like being a symbol of something) . I don't think he really liked descriptive photography (unless you're very good at it). So it made me think what kind of pictures i want to make and if it's true that pictures should always have a meaning. I think for me photography is more about capturing aspects of life that would be easily overlooked, elements that show the beauty of life, things that made me happy for a moment and i also like the contrasts of elements. I'm sure i didn't finish the list of things i like to capture but these are the ones that came into my mind now. I'm not sure that my photos alway have a meaning. Surely today's picture doesn't have a meaning...
I was just curious what others like to photograph and whether they look for the meaning and symbol in a photo.

Just to have an idea of what i'm talking about...take a look at this page. Some of the photos are really good and i like the messages that they carry. But i also think that this is a just one type of photography. Of course there are others as well.
What do you like to shoot?

It is a question of taste. Personally I like photos that are spontaneous and not so much planned or studied. K47 ones are very nice. Thanks fo sharing! Fri 10-Nov-2006 12:10

Well offcourse photos also sould be spontaneous and it shift from people to people, but a photo that caputre more then the eye can see, a photo that gives a meaning and a refexion to something, i think gives more... Like the ones in k47 that really carries with them a meaning and a purpose... A feeling and a meaning given from the shooter to the viewers own fantasy... Wed 15-Nov-2006 21:48

Excellent signage! Reminds me of American neon, too....
As for meaning in fotos, it all comes down to what appeals to YOU (or me, or that person or another). I rarely shoot fotos of people, and some others shoot almost exclusively with people in their images. I try to convey a sense of what I see, mostly random daily stuff, as I pass through this life. Often, I will explain what I am showing, but just as often I'll post a joke or something completely unrelated. I don't think fotos need to mean anything -- except to the foto taker. I don't try to please anybody. I simply feel this place is where I can share what I like and have been lucky to find like-minded people to admire and who can admire my images.
Fotos have a meaning if you set out to illustrate a particular idea. Fotos don't have meaning if they just happen to you. My fotos just happen to me.
And, by the way, I really like that you write so much in your captions.

back to lovely Sweden

So I'm back now to the cold cold Sweden. I was surprised to find a bit of snow on the streets which I wasn't that thrilled about but it's still nice to be back.

Lovely mini holiday I had although being in Brussels for two days without a camera can be really frustrating. Brussels is one of my favorite cities and it's always nice to go back there. I don't think i would ever get bored with photographing it.
The time spent in the Netherlands was really great and fun as well with the exception of one crazy evening . It was great to see my old friend and it was such a great joy to see some of my pictures from the fp put up on her wall. Can't really tell you how happy that made me feel. It makes this really worth it.
Just downloaded Robbie Williams "Me and my monkey". We were singing it the whole time I was in Maastricht. Not the song i expected it to be but it's still fun to listen to. Our version was better!!!!
Me and my monkeeeeeeeeey!!!

------------------.
*listening to: Amy Winehouse. Just discovered her music and it's simply great. It's a blues album and it's really worth listening to. Especially "Rehab" is a great song.

To answer the question about my music preferences at the moment....I think i am just experimenting around and turning away from the more commercial music. I started to listen to a lot of blues and jazz and usually less commercial music. Since I'm going through these changes I thought sharing with you the music that I'm discovering and this is the reason why i have a "listening to" section.

Care to comment?

Gamla Linkoping

Today's picture is another capture of the old city by night. It seems that i have a lot of pictures of the old city somehow.

Today I came across a very nice photography webpage of someone who also posts on the fotopages. In my opinion she has a great artistic sense and her pictures are just great. Besides she really knows her way in Photoshop. You can find her pictures HERE.

I also came across a great music album: the soundtrack of the "Weeds" series. The series is ok i guess but its music is just brilliant. I can't stop listening to it now. It's a great mix between jazz, soul, country, blues and a bunch of other influences. It's just great!! If you have the opportunity you should check it out cause it's worth it.

In other news, I'm going on a holiday for a week so I won't be able to post anything in the next days since i'm not taking my computer with me.

Well...enjoy your week-end y'all and see you in a week!!!

p.s. thanks for all the comments and private messages concerning the previous post. I also thought that the coloured picture was better but I was trying to stir a discussion about when should B&W be used in photography.

I loved this photo Caps. It conveys the "swedish" mood! Tue 31-Oct-2006 13:23

Discussion

Since I'm almost out of pictures I thought that I might do something different today. Here you have two pictures(actually the same) and I am curious to know your opinion about them. Do you prefer the black and white version or the colored one? Do you think that the black and white leaves out some important aspects that only the color can capture or is the black and white better? Private messages and comments are both welcomed.

I'm trying to find out the differences between the color and B&W in photography and what is the added value of B&W. I know that B&W makes the picture more artistic and dramatic...but why?

The picture is taken by a friend of mine and I just added the B&W version (part of my learning of photoshop) for the sake of this discussion. The construction in the photo is somekind of a dam in the States(don't know its name).
--------------------------------
*listening to: Coldplay "Fix you" (love the lyrics of some of their songs)

The black and white had eigher spirit or meaning... even a black and white picture needs work, you can tell pretty quickly if the maker had a rush doing it or not... i cast my vote on the color... Tue 24-Oct-2006 14:24

B&W fotography is like watching a familiar movie with no sound: you know what should be there, but the soundtrack plays in your head. It makes you watch the movie with more intensity, looking for the mouth movements of the characters, matching up the words in your head while lip-reading.
Sometimes images don't do a scene justice, in my opinion, between the fotographer and the viewer of the fotograph. The fotographer was there, and therefore was aware of the surroundings left and right, knows how the air felt and smelled, could hear the surroundings, maybe was there with others.... Even when people look at vacation fotos with family members, they can all relate and recall the events.
But if you share your vacation fotos with people who didn't go, they can't appreciate any of the pix unless any particular fotos are superb (like all of mine are! ).
For me, that is the difference between color and black-n-white images: the information not in the B&W has to be filled in by the viewer.
Of course, some black and whites are simply more dramatic for their starkness and contrasts; things in the foto sometimes pop out almost 3D-like.
In this case, I like the color foto better.
